Chemicals in cleaning products are on of the top household pollutants. You would probably be shocked by the number of harsh and dangerous chemicals you are exposed to when using toxic cleaners. Some companies even try to appear nontoxic by using marketing terms like “green,” “natural,” and even “nontoxic” when they are far from it.

This guide is not an extensive list of all the nontoxic cleaners, however, it can be a good starting point with some options provided for you.

Ingredients to Avoid:

  • Ammonia: respiratory and skin irritation, damage to organ systems, and damage to vision
  • Artificial Dyes: petroleum derived, possibly contaminated with heavy metals
  • Benzothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone: top allergen, known to cause allergic dermatitis and trigger eczema
  • Chlorine: respiratory irritation and endocrine disruptor
  • DEA (Diethanolamine) and TEA (Triethanolamine): hormone disruptors and carcinogens
  • Ethoxylated alcohols and surfactants: may be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide – known carcinogens
  • Formaldehyde: carcinogen and respiratory irritant
  • Fragrance/parfum: possible endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and body system toxins
  • Phenoxyethanol, PEG, polysorbates: may be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide – known carcinogens
  • Triclosan: skin irritation and hormone disruptor
