Lowtox home fragrance – plug ins, air fresheners, candles, and more

If you didn’t know, I used to be obsessed with all the home fragrance like many homes still – spray air fresheners, plug ins, candles. You could catch me in the Bath & Body Works and Yankee Candle stores looking for my next scent. Until I learned how toxic these are!

“Fragrance” is just a term that can include over 3,000 different chemicals. Manufacturers are not required to list or disclose the ingredients because they are protected as “trade secrets.” On the label you will find these proprietary ingredients labeled as: fragrance, parfum, aroma. Even natural fragrance is not safe unless the ingredients are disclosed.

Fragrance is associated with:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Nervous system disfunction
  • Endocrine disruption (AKA disrupts hormones)
  • Allergic reactions and respiratory irritation
  • Cancer

One of the most notoriously toxic ingredients found in fragrance are a group of chemicals known as phthalates. These are used to make fragrance chemicals “stick,” to last longer and linger. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors and some can mimic estrogen in the body.

Once I learned the dangers of fragrance, I immediately trashed the toxic home fragrance products I had been using all my life! I eventually did begin to miss to cozy candles in the fall and the lemony summer scents. So I went on a mission to find companies who disclose ingredients in their fragrance and who make safe products.
